Thank Your Member of Congress for Supporting Medical Research Funding
The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) commends Congress for making medical research funding a national priority in the fiscal year (FY) 2016 omnibus spending package. The investments made by the omnibus spending package represent a significant step towards putting the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Cancer Institute (NCI), and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which have seen flat funding or outright cuts for more than a decade, back on a path of sustained and predictable growth. We are in a time of tremendous promise in cancer research, and the AACR has been consistently advocating that sustained and predictable growth in the budgets of the NIH, NCI, and FDA is crucially needed.
In addition to applauding the $2 billion increase for the NIH that is contained in the omnibus bill, the AACR is equally pleased to see additional investments being made to the NCI and FDA. As detailed in the AACR Cancer Progress Report 2016, it is the synergy between these three organizations that drives the progression from laboratory discovery to new cancer treatment, and these federal investments are crucial in this process that will ultimately improve the quality of life for cancer patients.
Looking forward to FY 2017 and beyond, it is crucial that the momentum of bipartisan support for medical research continue to grow, such that today's bill marks the first step along the path of sustained, robust, and predictable increases for the NIH, NCI, and FDA. Such a commitment has the potential to transform cancer care, spur innovation, and most importantly bring hope to patients and their loved ones.
